Research Notes

Swedish fast assault craft for archipelago and littoral operations

The CB90 was developed to move armed troops quickly through shallow, confined, and coastal waters.

The Combat Boat 90, or CB90, is a Swedish fast assault craft developed by Dockstavarvet and now associated with Saab's naval portfolio. It was shaped by the Swedish archipelago environment, where small, fast, shallow-draft boats can move troops and equipment through complex coastal terrain. Its success led to wide use and newer CB90 Next Generation developments.

Waterjet propulsion, bow ramp, and shallow draft define the role

The CB90 combines speed and maneuverability with direct troop landing from a compact aluminum hull.

The CB90 uses waterjet propulsion and a shallow-draft hull to maneuver at high speed in coastal and riverine environments. A bow ramp allows troops to disembark quickly onto beaches or unprepared shorelines. Saab describes later versions with improved sensors, ergonomics, protection, and combat-management options, showing how a simple assault-boat concept has evolved into a more networked littoral platform.

Small craft with high tactical value in coastal warfare

The CB90 is valuable where speed, surprise, and access matter more than heavy ship endurance.

In service, CB90-type craft can insert troops, patrol waterways, support security missions, and operate from larger ships or shore bases. They are not substitutes for corvettes or patrol ships, but they give naval infantry and coastal forces a fast tactical connector. Their limitations are seakeeping, endurance, and vulnerability if caught by heavier weapons, but in the right littoral setting they are extremely useful.
