Research Notes

Swedish top-attack anti-tank guided missile

The RBS 56 BILL was a Swedish man-portable wire-guided anti-tank missile developed by Bofors. Its name reflected the Bofors Infantry Light and Lethal concept, emphasizing a portable weapon able to attack armored vehicles from above.

Overfly top-attack profile against tank roof armor

BILL's key feature was its top-attack engagement method, flying above the line of sight and detonating downward against the thinner upper armor of a tank. This made it more threatening to modern armor than many first-generation direct-impact ATGMs.

Important step toward modern infantry anti-armor design

The system sits between classic wire-guided missiles and later fully fire-and-forget weapons. BILL showed the value of top-attack geometry for infantry anti-tank teams, a design theme later seen in more advanced systems.
