The Cheng Kung-class frigates are a series of eight guided-missile frigates operated by the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy, based on the U.S. Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class design. Commissioned between 1993 and 1995, these ships are equipped with advanced weapon systems, including HF-2 anti-ship missiles and Bofors 40 mm guns, and serve various roles in Taiwan's maritime defense, including anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and escort duties.

Research Notes

Taiwanese Oliver Hazard Perry derivative

The Cheng Kung class is a Taiwanese guided-missile frigate family based on the U.S. Oliver Hazard Perry design and built for the Republic of China Navy. The ships gave Taiwan a locally produced surface combatant with air-defense, anti-submarine, and anti-surface roles during a period of sustained naval modernization.

Escort and sea-control functions

Cheng Kung-class ships combine standard missile air-defense capability, torpedoes, a medium naval gun, anti-ship missiles, and helicopter operations. Their main value is not specialization in one mission but the ability to escort convoys, patrol approaches, and add layered defense around higher-value naval units.

Important in Taiwan Strait defense

For Taiwan, frigates such as the Cheng Kung class help distribute naval combat power across multiple hulls. They support maritime surveillance, anti-submarine screening, and wartime sea-lane defense in a geography where ports, airfields, and surface forces are exposed to missile and air attack.
