Overview
Tien Chien II
The Tien Chien II, also known as Sky Sword II or TC-2, is a Taiwanese beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. It features an inertial navigation system, a data-link for mid-course guidance, and active radar homing for terminal guidance. The missile is capable of engaging multiple targets and has ECCM capabilities. It was developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and entered service in 1994. The missile has a range of up to 100 km and can reach speeds of Mach 6.

Research Notes

Taiwanese Sky Sword II missile family

Tien Chien II, also known as Sky Sword II or TC-2, is a Taiwanese medium-range missile family developed by NCSIST. The air-to-air version is associated with Taiwan's indigenous fighter program, while later derivatives extend the missile into ground-based and ship-based air-defense roles.

Indigenous radar-guided air defense building block

The system is important because it gives Taiwan a locally controlled missile technology base rather than full dependence on imported weapons. Its radar-guided design supports beyond-visual-range fighter combat and can be adapted into naval or land air-defense systems, adding density to Taiwan's layered defense architecture.

Resilience value beyond raw missile performance

For Taiwan, indigenous missile production has strategic value beyond individual technical specifications. Local design and production can improve wartime replacement prospects, support upgrades, and complicate an opponent's air campaign planning. TC-2 derivatives therefore matter as part of a wider distributed air-defense and fighter survivability strategy.
