Research Notes

Supersonic carrier nuclear bomber

The Vigilante was an advanced carrier-based nuclear bomber whose mission changed rapidly.

The A-5 Vigilante began as North American's ambitious carrier-based nuclear strike aircraft for the U.S. Navy. Developed before ballistic missile submarines fully displaced carrier nuclear bombing, it aimed to give carriers a fast, high-altitude supersonic delivery platform. The design was technologically advanced for its time, but its original strategic bomber role narrowed quickly as naval nuclear doctrine changed.

Advanced airframe and unusual weapons bay

The A-5 combined advanced supersonic performance with an unusual linear bomb bay.

The aircraft used a large twin-engine supersonic airframe, high-mounted wing, and sophisticated avionics. Its most unusual feature was a linear weapons bay between the engines, intended to eject a nuclear store and fuel tanks rearward. That arrangement was innovative but complicated, and the aircraft's speed, sensors, and payload capacity ultimately suited reconnaissance better than the original bomber concept.

Reborn as RA-5C reconnaissance aircraft

The Vigilante found its lasting role as a fast carrier reconnaissance aircraft.

The Vigilante's major operational career came as the RA-5C reconnaissance variant, especially over Vietnam. In that role it carried sophisticated cameras and sensors for high-speed carrier-based reconnaissance. Its service history is important because it shows a rare shift from strategic bomber to reconnaissance platform, preserving a costly aircraft by finding a mission that matched its strengths.
