Development lineage
The AH-6 grew from the small Hughes/McDonnell Douglas Little Bird family into a light attack platform optimized for compact, rapidly deployable missions.
The AH-6 Little Bird traces its roots to the compact OH-6/Cayuse and MD 500 helicopter family, a lineage prized for small size, agility, and low operating footprint. Boeing's modern AH-6 offering adapts that heritage into a dedicated light attack and armed reconnaissance platform, with the AH-6i positioned for international customers that need a lower-cost alternative to heavier attack helicopters. The development path kept the aircraft's central advantage intact: it can operate from constrained sites, support special operations-style missions, and deliver armed overwatch where a larger helicopter would be harder to deploy.
