Research Notes

Bolt-action bullpup alternative to M82

The M90 and M95 provided Barrett with a shorter, bolt-action .50 BMG rifle family.

The Barrett M90 and M95 were developed as bolt-action bullpup alternatives to the larger semi-automatic M82. The Model 95 manual documents Barrett's production bullpup rifle, while reference sources describe the M95 as an improved successor to the M90. The concept offered .50 BMG reach with fewer moving parts and a shorter overall length, at the cost of manual cycling.

Compact bullpup .50-caliber rifle

A rear-mounted action and five-round magazine reduce overall length while preserving the long barrel needed for .50 BMG performance.

The M95's bullpup layout places the action and magazine behind the trigger group, shortening the rifle without dramatically shortening the barrel. A bolt-action mechanism simplifies the design compared with the M82, while a muzzle brake and bipod help manage recoil and stability. The result is a specialized rifle for users who want .50-caliber power in a more compact package.

Niche military and law-enforcement use

The M95 family saw more limited adoption than the M82/M107 but filled a distinct compact anti-materiel niche.

In service, the M95 has never been as famous as the M82, but it offered a useful tradeoff: less complexity and a shorter package for deliberate long-range shots. Its selection for trials and export use shows that some users valued the bullpup bolt-action concept. The M90/M95 page helps readers see that Barrett's .50-caliber catalog included more than the iconic semi-automatic rifles.
