Overview
The Barrett M90 is a bullpup, bolt-action rifle produced by Barrett Firearms from 1990 to 1995, designed for consumers seeking a .50 BMG alternative to the semi-automatic M82. It features a compact layout, a fluted barrel with a muzzle brake, a detachable magazine, and an integrated bipod, making it suitable for long-range shooting and stable firing support, though it was eventually superseded by the M95.

Research Notes

Prototype .338 Lapua semi-automatic rifle from Barrett

medium

The Barrett M98 was a late-1990s prototype sniper rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum. It was intended to sit between 7.62 mm precision rifles and .50 BMG anti-materiel rifles by offering long-range performance in a lighter semi-automatic package. The design did not proceed to regular production, partly because Barrett's later rifle lineup moved in other directions.

Gas operation and .338 Lapua filled a capability gap

medium

The M98 concept used gas operation and detachable box magazines to combine magnum-range precision with faster follow-up shots than a conventional bolt gun. Its .338 Lapua chambering targeted the gap between standard NATO sniper rifles and heavier .50-caliber systems. The result was technically interesting but commercially fragile, since military precision-rifle users were still heavily invested in bolt-action reliability and logistics.

Useful predecessor to later Barrett precision-rifle thinking

medium

Although the M98 stayed a prototype, it shows Barrett experimenting beyond .50 BMG rifles before the M98B and other later precision-rifle products became better known. Its database value is as a transition design: a private-sector attempt to make .338 Lapua work in a semi-automatic precision role during a period when long-range military sniping requirements were expanding.
