Overview
The Calico M960A is an American selective-fire submachine gun, first produced in 1990, developed from the earlier Calico M950. Chambered for the 9x19mm Luger cartridge, its most distinctive feature is its feeding system, which uses either 50-round or 100-round helical magazines mounted on top of the rear of the receiver. Compared to the M950, the M960A includes an extending butt and a forward grip, and it has a rate of fire of 750 rpm.

Research Notes

Distinctive US submachine gun built around a helical magazine

medium

The Calico M960/M960A submachine gun was developed by Calico Light Weapons Systems as part of a family of compact firearms using top-mounted helical magazines. Its defining idea was high ammunition capacity without the length of a long box magazine or the width of a drum. That made it visually distinctive and technically interesting, even though it did not secure major military adoption.

High-capacity 9 mm system with ergonomic tradeoffs

medium

The M960A fires 9x19 mm ammunition and uses a 50- or 100-round helical magazine mounted above the rear of the receiver. The arrangement gives unusually high capacity for a submachine gun, but it also changes balance, sight height, and reloading habits. The design is therefore a classic tradeoff between magazine capacity and practical handling.

More notable as an engineering outlier than a service standard

medium

Calico submachine guns appear frequently in media and firearms discussions because their silhouette is unusual, but their service footprint stayed limited. For equipment research, the M960 is useful as a case study in magazine architecture: a real attempt to solve capacity constraints that created new usability and reliability questions instead of replacing conventional box-fed SMGs.
