Overview
Ethan Allen (SSBN-608)
The USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) was a pivotal Cold War-era ballistic missile submarine, launched on November 22, 1960, and notable for being the second vessel named after the Revolutionary War hero. As the lead ship of its class, it featured advanced capabilities, including Polaris A-2 missiles, and conducted the first complete operational test of an American strategic missile during Operation Dominic in 1962, marking a significant milestone in U.S. naval history.

Lead ship of the Ethan Allen SSBN class

medium

USS Ethan Allen was the lead ship of the first U.S. ballistic-missile submarine class designed from the start for Polaris missiles.

USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) was the lead ship of a U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarine class that followed the earlier George Washington class. Navysite lists her builder as Electric Boat, commissioning date as 8 August 1961, and later decommissioning in 1983. The Ethan Allen class matters because it was designed from the outset around the Polaris missile mission rather than converted from an attack-submarine design. That made it an important step in the maturation of the U.S. sea-based nuclear deterrent.

Polaris missile submarine architecture

medium

The ship combined nuclear propulsion, 16 Polaris ballistic missile tubes, torpedo armament, and long submerged endurance.

Ethan Allen's design centered on survivable deterrent patrols. Like other early SSBNs, she carried 16 submarine-launched ballistic missiles and torpedo tubes for self-defense, while nuclear propulsion allowed long submerged operations. The class was larger and more purpose-built than the George Washington conversion lineage. In equipment terms, the key characteristics are not only displacement and speed, but patrol endurance, missile-tube arrangement, crew procedures, and communications systems that supported strategic nuclear command and control.

Deterrence patrols and nuclear test history

medium

Ethan Allen served Cold War deterrent patrols and is closely associated with the only U.S. live Polaris nuclear-warhead test.

The operational history of SSBN-608 is notable because Ethan Allen participated in Operation Frigate Bird in 1962, firing a Polaris missile with a live nuclear warhead during the Dominic test series. That event demonstrated end-to-end capability from submerged launch to nuclear detonation. The ship later continued deterrent service before decommissioning and disposal through the U.S. nuclear-powered ship recycling program, reflected in NAVSEA ship-list records. Its significance is therefore technical, operational, and strategic.
