Cranked-arrow F-16 technology demonstrator
mediumF-16XL was an experimental cranked-arrow-wing F-16 derivative that competed as a strike fighter and later served NASA research.
The F-16XL was an experimental General Dynamics F-16 derivative with a distinctive cranked-arrow delta wing. It competed in the U.S. Air Force Enhanced Tactical Fighter competition that ultimately selected the F-15E, and the two prototypes later transferred to NASA for flight research. NASA identifies F-16XL Ship No. 1 in its Dryden/Armstrong image archive, while NASA fact-sheet material describes the aircraft's research role. It should be treated as a technology demonstrator, not an operational fighter variant.
