From Redeye successor to standard US MANPADS
Stinger became the US standard portable air-defense missile after Redeye.
FIM-92 Stinger was developed as the United States' improved shoulder-fired air-defense missile after the earlier Redeye generation. The program emphasized a compact fire-and-forget weapon that infantry, airborne, and light units could carry without a vehicle-mounted radar. Over time the missile family was adapted beyond the shoulder launcher, including helicopter and vehicle-mounted roles.
