Overview
GECAL 50 / GAU-19
The GECAL 50, or GAU-19/A, is an electrically driven rotary heavy machine gun with a three-barrel configuration that fires .50 BMG cartridges, capable of selectable rates of fire at 1,000 or 2,000 rounds per minute. Developed initially in the 1980s and later refined into the lighter GAU-19/B version, it is designed for reliability and high ammunition capacity, with applications on various military helicopters, including the OH-58D Kiowa.

Research Notes

Three-barrel .50 caliber Gatling gun from the GECAL program

medium

The GAU-19, originally known as GECAL 50, is an electrically driven .50 BMG Gatling-type heavy machine gun. It began with General Electric and later continued through Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics production lines. The weapon was intended to provide very high rates of heavy-caliber fire from vehicles, helicopters, boats, and fixed mounts.

Externally powered rotary gun for high-volume suppressive fire

medium

Unlike a conventional recoil- or gas-operated heavy machine gun, the GAU-19 uses external power to rotate multiple barrels. This allows high cyclic rates and sustained fire while spreading heat across the barrel cluster. The tradeoff is power supply, mount complexity, and ammunition consumption.

Vehicle and aircraft weapon where fire density matters

medium

The GAU-19 is suited to convoy defense, helicopter door or pod mounts, naval small-craft defense, and remote weapon stations where short bursts of dense .50-caliber fire are valuable. Its role is not precision; it is overwhelming suppressive fire against light vehicles, personnel, and small boats.
