Research Notes

U.S.-built Kidd-class guided-missile destroyer

medium

The Kidd class was a four-ship U.S. guided-missile destroyer class later transferred to Taiwan.

The Kidd class comprised four U.S.-built guided-missile destroyers based on the Spruance hull but configured with stronger air-defense systems. Seaforces and Destroyer History material both document the four ships and their U.S. Navy service before eventual transfer to Taiwan. This entry represents the original U.S. Kidd-class platform, distinct from Taiwan's later Kee Lung service designation.

Spruance-derived hull with stronger air defense

medium

The class combined destroyer endurance with area-air-defense sensors and missiles.

Kidd-class ships were originally intended for export to Iran before the 1979 revolution, then entered U.S. service. Their design combined gas-turbine propulsion, large destroyer hull volume, Standard missile capability, guns, torpedoes, and helicopter support. The result was a powerful but small class that did not fit neatly into U.S. Navy standardization plans.

Capable class with limited U.S. fleet integration

medium

Kidd-class destroyers were strong ships, but a four-ship class carried logistics and modernization penalties.

The destroyers offered serious air-defense and escort capability, but small class size made long-term U.S. sustainment less attractive than larger standardized classes. Their later transfer to Taiwan gave them a second strategic role as major surface combatants in the ROC Navy. The class is best evaluated through both its technical strength and its unusual acquisition history.
