Overview
Kidd (DDG-993)
The USS Kidd (DDG-993), commissioned in 1981 as the lead ship of the Kidd-class destroyers, was originally intended for Iran but adapted for U.S. Navy service with advanced air defense and NBC protection capabilities. After a distinguished operational history, including participation in key missions like Operation Desert Storm, the ship was renamed ROCS Tso Ying and now serves in the Republic of China Navy as a Kee Lung-class guided-missile destroyer, based at Tso Ying Naval Base in Taiwan.

Research Notes

Spruance-derived destroyer originally ordered for Iran

medium

USS Kidd was the lead ship of a four-ship guided-missile destroyer class originally ordered for Iran before the 1979 revolution. The US Navy commissioned the ships instead, creating a high-end air-defense variant related to the Spruance hull. Their Gulf-oriented environmental systems made them well suited to hot-weather operations.

Powerful area-defense fit on a destroyer hull

medium

The Kidd class combined Standard missile air defense, strong radar and combat systems, anti-submarine equipment, guns, and helicopter support. Compared with Spruance destroyers, the class had a much stronger air-defense role. This made it one of the most capable non-Aegis destroyer designs in US service.
