Improved M110 heavy self-propelled howitzer

medium

M110A2 was the upgraded long-barrel member of the U.S. 203 mm M110 howitzer family.

M110A2 was an improved version of the M110 8-inch self-propelled howitzer. FAS identifies the M110A2 as a self-propelled howitzer, and Weaponsystems.net places the M110 family alongside the related M107 chassis lineage. The current SPH category is appropriate.

Longer barrel and improved range

medium

The A2 upgrade improved the heavy howitzer's reach while retaining the open tracked chassis concept.

The M110A2's most visible improvement was the longer barrel and associated range increase. It kept the same basic heavy-artillery logic: large shell, mobile chassis, open crew area, and general-support missions. Many M110A2 systems were created through upgrades or conversions from earlier M110 or M107-family vehicles.

Last major U.S. 8-inch SPH generation

medium

M110A2 matters because it represents the mature endpoint of U.S. heavy tube artillery before retirement from U.S. service.

The system remained powerful but increasingly hard to justify as precision 155 mm artillery, MLRS, and tactical missiles improved. It retains interest for foreign users and recent wartime transfers because heavy shells can still be useful when ammunition and maintenance are available. The page should distinguish it from the baseline M110.
