National Match M14 sniper conversion

medium

The M21 converted selected National Match M14 rifles into a dedicated U.S. Army sniper system.

The M21 Sniper Weapon System was built around the National Match M14 rifle and an optical sight package. Army manual material describes the rifle and scope together as the weapon system, not simply a scoped service rifle. This distinction matters because the M21 represented a standardized answer to Vietnam-era sniper requirements, combining selected rifles, match preparation, optics, ammunition, and training doctrine.

Semi-automatic precision fire

medium

The M21 traded bolt-action simplicity for faster follow-up shots from a 7.62 mm NATO semi-automatic platform.

The M21's semi-automatic action gave snipers and designated marksmen quicker follow-up fire than bolt-action rifles, while retaining the reach and penetration of 7.62x51 mm NATO. Its value was strongest where multiple fleeting targets, patrol overwatch, or urban fighting made rate of fire useful. The tradeoff was that accuracy, bedding, optics, and maintenance were more sensitive than with a purpose-built bolt-action sniper rifle.

Vietnam legacy and later niche use

medium

The M21 became the Army's standard sniper rifle before being replaced by the M24, then returned in designated marksman roles.

The M21 is closely associated with U.S. Army sniper development during and after Vietnam. GlobalSecurity notes its place as the primary Army sniper rifle of that era and its later replacement by the M24. Even after replacement, M14-derived precision rifles returned to use in later conflicts because semi-automatic 7.62 mm rifles remained useful between ordinary rifles and dedicated sniper systems.
