Postwar 81 mm medium mortar

medium

The M29 replaced earlier U.S. 81 mm mortars with a lighter, longer-ranged medium mortar after World War II.

The M29 was an American 81 mm medium mortar developed in the early Cold War period. Military Factory and U.S. infantry reference material describe the M29/M29A1 family as a crew-served mortar intended to improve on the older M1 mortar and support infantry units with organic indirect fire.

Medium mortar fire support

medium

The M29 gave infantry units a heavier payload and longer reach than 60 mm mortars without moving into heavy mortar class.

The system occupied the classic medium mortar niche. It was heavier than platoon-level 60 mm weapons but could still be broken down and moved by a crew. Its 81 mm bombs provided better explosive effect and range for suppression, smoke, illumination, and defensive fires. Later M29A1 changes improved barrel life and maintainability.

Vietnam-era standard before M252

medium

The M29 saw extensive use before the M252 replaced it as the modern U.S. 81 mm mortar.

The M29 is strongly associated with Cold War and Vietnam-era infantry mortar service. It remained useful for a long period because the basic 81 mm role was stable: responsive fires close to maneuver units. The later M252 offered a more modern system with improved ergonomics and performance, making the M29 an important predecessor rather than a dead-end design.
