Development Context
mediumM8 AGS was developed to give U.S. airborne and light forces a deployable direct-fire armored gun system.
The M8 Armored Gun System was intended to replace the M551 Sheridan in light and airborne formations with a more modern tracked gun platform. Its mission was not to act as a heavy main battle tank, but to provide protected, air-deployable 105 mm direct fire for forces that could not deploy Abrams tanks quickly. The original program was cancelled before full fielding, but the design remained influential in later light-tank and Mobile Protected Firepower discussions.
