Overview
Mk-12 SPR
The Mk 12 MOD 0/1/H Special Purpose Rifle (SPR) is a designated marksman rifle developed for U.S. Navy special operations, designed to offer greater effective range than the M4 carbine while being shorter than the SR-25. Introduced in 2002 and phased out in 2017, it features a semi-automatic design with match-grade barrels and was influenced by operational experiences in Somalia, evolving from a concept proposed by ArmaLite's Mark Westrom.

Research Notes

Special-operations designated marksman rifle

medium

The Mk 12 SPR was developed to give U.S. special-operations units more reach and precision than the M4 while remaining lighter than 7.62 mm sniper rifles.

The Mk 12 Special Purpose Rifle originated from U.S. special-operations requirements for a 5.56 mm precision rifle that could extend effective range beyond a standard carbine. Developed around Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane and special-operations user needs, the SPR concept evolved from a receiver/upper idea into a complete weapon system. It became associated with designated marksman use during the post-2001 conflict period.

Accurized 5.56 mm AR-platform rifle

medium

The Mk 12 combined match barrels, free-float handguards, optics, sound suppressor compatibility, and precision ammunition in an AR-pattern platform.

Technically, the Mk 12 is an accurized AR-15/M16-family rifle chambered in 5.56 mm NATO. Its value came from high-quality barrels, free-float systems, optics, tuned components, and ammunition optimized for longer-range precision. It remained lighter and more familiar than 7.62 mm sniper rifles, but offered better precision than a standard carbine. The design sits between assault rifle and sniper rifle categories.

Bridge between carbine and sniper rifle

medium

The Mk 12 gave special-operations teams a practical marksman tool for patrols, overwatch, and precision fire at intermediate ranges.

Operationally, the Mk 12 filled the designated marksman role for units that wanted precision without carrying a heavier 7.62 mm system. It was useful for overwatch, target discrimination, and controlled fire at distances where an M4 was less effective. Its later replacement by newer systems does not reduce its importance: the Mk 12 helped popularize modern AR-pattern precision rifles and influenced later designated marksman setups.
