Research Notes

Marine Corps heavy-lift helicopter

The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion is a heavy-lift helicopter used by the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy for moving troops, vehicles, supplies, and heavy external loads. Its three-engine layout and large rotor system make it one of the most capable Western military transport helicopters of its generation.

Heavy external lift from austere sites

The aircraft can move large payloads by sling load, carry personnel internally, and support ship-to-shore logistics, tactical recovery, and expeditionary sustainment. Its practical value is the ability to move heavy equipment where roads, runways, or port infrastructure are unavailable or contested.

Aging but critical lift capacity

The CH-53E remains important because heavy vertical lift is difficult to replace. The newer CH-53K is intended to take over the role, but the Super Stallion has carried the Marine Corps' heavy-lift burden through decades of operations, training, and crisis response.
