mediumCGN-38 was the lead ship of the Navy's late Cold War nuclear-powered cruiser class.
USS Virginia (CGN-38) was the lead ship of the Virginia-class nuclear-powered guided-missile cruisers. The ship entered service in 1976 after the Navy's 1975 surface combatant reclassification shifted nuclear destroyer-leader concepts into cruiser designations. Its class represented one of the last U.S. attempts to pair nuclear-powered carrier groups with nuclear-powered surface escorts.
