Armsel Striker
The Armsel Striker, designed by Hilton R. Walker in 1981 for riot control, is a 12-gauge shotgun featuring a bulky revolving cylinder. It was later improved as the Protecta, which eliminated the cylinder rotation for better reliability, and inspired several variants, including the American-made SWD Street Sweeper.

Research Notes

South African revolving shotgun

The Armsel Striker was developed by Hilton Walker as a high-capacity combat and riot-control shotgun.

The Armsel Striker was a distinctive South African 12-gauge shotgun design from the early 1980s. Public profiles identify Hilton Walker as the designer and describe the weapon's revolving-cylinder layout. The design aimed to provide more ready rounds than a conventional pump shotgun, making it attractive on paper for riot control, security, and close-range combat roles.

Twelve-round revolving cylinder

Its large drum-like cylinder gave high capacity but also made the weapon bulky and slow to reload.

The Striker's signature feature is its revolving cylinder. This gave the shotgun a high onboard capacity for 12-gauge shells, but it also created practical drawbacks: bulk, weight, and a cumbersome reload process. Later Protecta variants attempted to improve reliability and handling. The design therefore illustrates a recurring small-arms tradeoff: capacity can solve one problem while creating new ergonomic and mechanical ones.

Recognizable but specialized shotgun

The Striker became famous visually, but its practical use stayed limited compared with simpler pump and semi-automatic shotguns.

The Striker's service history is more niche than its visual fame suggests. It appeared with security and police users and inspired variants such as the Protecta and Street Sweeper, but conventional shotguns remained simpler and easier to manage. In equipment context, the Striker is valuable because it shows how unusual high-capacity shotgun concepts can become culturally recognizable even when operational adoption is limited.
