The FROLINAT rebellion exposed how fragile the Chadian state remained after independence and how quickly regional, ethnic, and political exclusion could harden into armed revolt. The Front for the National Liberation of Chad (Front de libération nationale du Tchad) was established in 1966 and launched an insurgency in northern Chad against the government of President François Tombalbaye, becoming the most important insurgent vehicle for northern opposition to the southern-dominated government in N'Djamena.
The revolt was rooted in deep-seated ethnic, religious, and regional tensions between the predominantly Arab and Muslim north and the Christian and animist south, tensions exacerbated by French colonial policies and post-independence governance. FROLINAT was founded by Ibrahim Abatcha, a former member of Chad's parliament who had been forced into exile, and it received initial support from Sudan and later from Libya under Muammar Gaddafi. Its fighters, primarily from the Toubou and Arab communities, were motivated by economic marginalisation, political exclusion, and cultural oppression under Tombalbaye's rule, and they opened the campaign with guerrilla attacks on government outposts and tax collection centres in the Tibesti and Borkou regions. French military intervention under Operation Limousin in 1968 temporarily stabilised Tombalbaye's government, but the insurgency continued to spread across northern and central Chad, accompanied by ethnic cleansing, forced relocations, and brutal counterinsurgency tactics that further alienated local populations.
The rebellion was not an isolated mutiny; it was the opening of a long crisis in Chadian sovereignty.
