Operation Storm
Operation Storm was one of the decisive late-war offensives of the Yugoslav conflicts, and its military success was inseparable from massive political and demographic consequences. In August 1995 Croatian forces rapidly recaptured most of the self-declared Serb-held Krajina region, changing the military balance in Croatia and affecting the wider war in Bosnia. Conducted from August 4 to 7, 1995, during the final phase of the Croatian War of Independence, Operacija Oluja was the largest European land battle since World War II. Approximately 200,000 Croatian troops launched a coordinated attack across multiple fronts against 40,000 Krajina Serb forces. Under the leadership of General Ante Gotovina and other commanders, Croatian forces employed combined arms tactics with artillery, armor, and air support, in an operation meticulously planned with international tacit approval after the Krajina Serbs rejected peace proposals. Within four days they achieved complete victory, liberating territories held by Serbian forces since 1991.
The Serbian population of the region, estimated at 200,000 people, fled en masse to Bosnia and Serbia in the largest population movement in Europe since the Second World War. While the offensive restored Croatian territorial integrity and effectively ended the war, it also produced war crimes against Serbian civilians during and after the fighting, and the UN International Criminal Tribunal later prosecuted several Croatian generals. The victory secured Croatian independence and reshaped the Balkan geopolitical landscape.
