Anthropic Warns of AI Military Abuse Risks
According to a report by Reference News Network on September 13, the UK’s Guardian website reported on September 10 that a report released by Anthropic on the 10th indicated that criminals, state-sponsored organizations, spyware vendors, and scientists have attempted to use the company's powerful artificial intelligence (AI) models to design missiles and bombs, as well as to create lethal pathogens.
In this 154-page report, Anthropic stated: “The cases we share here are not typical abuses, but rather some of the most notable and recent examples of threat activities we have identified to date.”
The company specifically detailed five cases in which researchers used its AI models for biological research. The report noted that in these cases, researchers circumvented the security measures the company had set up to intercept users from “unopened service areas” and managed to conceal the true purpose of their research work.
The report stated: “Biological misuse is one of the most serious risks posed by cutting-edge AI models. Without appropriate safeguards, such capabilities could have catastrophic consequences.”
It is reported that such research could be used for vaccine development as well as for the manufacture of biological weapons.
Additionally, according to a report by the New York Times website on September 11, Anthropic stated that it has repeatedly thwarted attempts by scientists to use its leading AI models for research that could assist in the development of biological weapons this year.
In a report describing the misuse of its AI models, Anthropic stated that it could not determine whether these research efforts were for legitimate or malicious purposes, as effective biological research could also aid in the design of dangerous pathogens. In the face of this uncertainty, Anthropic indicated that it chose to act cautiously, as the consequences of missing malicious activities could be severe.
The report noted that biological misuse as a survival risk posed by AI has received less attention, partly because past cases typically occurred only in research environments rather than in the real world. (Translated by Zhao Feifei)
