Former Army Maj. Nidal Hasan will be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, on Dec. 3, the Army announced Wednesday on social media, returning Hasan to the installation where he killed 13 people in 2009.

Hasan’s execution is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central Time, acting Army Secretary Adam Telle announced. An execution order signed by Telle on Oct. 6 says President Donald Trump approved Hasan’s death sentence on Oct. 2 following a recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The selection of Fort Hood marks a departure from the Army’s previously disclosed plans for carrying out executions.

Under a plan called “Operation Resolute Justice,” the Army was preparing to coordinate with the Federal Bureau of Prisons to transport military death-row prisoners from the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, Task & Purpose reported in June. An Army official confirmed details of the plan at the time.

“Exercises regarding this operation have been conducted regularly for the past twenty years,” Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith told Task & Purpose at the time, calling the drills a standard part of the Army’s preparations should a president approve a death sentence.

Hasan, then an Army psychiatrist, killed 12 soldiers and one civilian and wounded dozens more. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 2013. In 2025, the Supreme Court denied Hasan’s request for a review of his Army court-martial conviction, Army officials said.

Hasan is one of four military inmates on death row at Fort Leavenworth, alongside Ronald Gray, Hasan Akbar and Timothy Hennis. All of whom are guilty of murder.

The Pentagon referred questions about the decision to stage Hasan’s execution at Fort Hood to the Army, which did not immediately respond.
