Australia has been slow to advance its ground-based air defense capability upgrades, but with assistance from the United States, it is now prioritizing the integration of sensors, software, and weaponry from its existing inventory to promote a hybrid solution.
This pioneering integrated system successfully launched a Standard-2 interceptor missile, providing an alternative option to purchasing expensive air defense systems like the Patriot. Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Navy were deeply involved in the project.
During the "2026 Tapan Snake Strike" exercise, a Standard-2 missile was launched by an expeditionary launch system at the Woomera Test Range in southern Australia.
To intercept a BQM-74E target drone, the Standard-2 missile was controlled by a virtualized Lockheed Martin Aegis combat system and guided using a phased array radar produced by Australia's CEA Technologies.
A statement provided by Lockheed Martin to the Defense News weekly website stated that this technological approach "opens up channels for cross-service equipment integration and interoperability, achieving stronger combat capabilities and higher cost-effectiveness."
Jeremy King, Lockheed Martin's CEO for the Australia-New Zealand region, said: "This prototype system utilizes existing missiles, launchers, and command and control systems, capable of launching all onboard weapons equipped on current Hobart-class destroyers and future Hunter-class frigates."
The report stated that this development is significant for the Royal Australian Navy, which is equipped with Standard-2 and Standard-6 missiles.
Australia's innovative air defense equipment combination scheme has been in the works for a long time, at least at the conceptual level.
Nick Hogan, the head of the Australian Air Force's capabilities, said in an interview with the Defense News weekly website last year: "With a limited missile inventory, we must enhance operational flexibility as much as possible, allowing naval munitions to be used for land operations and land-based munitions to be deployed for maritime missions. There are multiple development paths ahead. We strive to maximize investment returns based on domestically developed equipment within feasible limits."
Australia's 2023 Defense Strategic Review stated that it should not "spend unaffordable costs in pursuit of a long-term, nearly perfect final solution," and the Australian government should allocate sufficient resources to "timely establish initial operational capabilities."
The subsequent 2026 Defense Strategy proposed the requirement to "accelerate the deployment of ground-based active medium-range missile defense systems by investing in missile launchers and munitions and integrating them into command and control systems."
This strategic document designates missile defense as a priority, stating that it is essential to protect critical defense infrastructure against long-range, high-speed missile threats.
Australian defense officials emphasized that this new air defense weapon is still in the research and development stage.
