Born to replace the Defender, the Grenadier now eyes military duty

The vehicle built to replace the Land Rover Defender on the civilian market is now competing to replace Land Rovers in British Army service, and its bid just got two companies stronger.

Hobson Industries and TVS Supply Chain Solutions have joined Team Grenadier, the industrial group INEOS Automotive formed in June to compete for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle program, the company said. The two new members bring vehicle reconditioning, fleet support, parts management and global supply chain experience, joining existing partners SMT Defence and NMS UK.

The vehicle at the center of the bid, the INEOS Grenadier, exists because of the Defender’s retirement. Jaguar Land Rover ended production of the original Defender in January 2016 after nearly 70 years, then relaunched the nameplate on a more upmarket, unibody SUV built in Slovakia rather than at Land Rover’s traditional Solihull plant. British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, a longtime Defender owner, tried to buy the old tooling from Land Rover to keep building it. Land Rover turned him down.

Ratcliffe built his own version instead. INEOS Automotive developed the Grenadier as what the company has called a spiritual successor to the old Defender, sharing its basic recipe of a ladder-frame chassis, solid axles and boxy, simple bodywork rather than the unibody construction and driver-assist technology of modern SUVs. Land Rover has repeatedly challenged INEOS’s right to sell the vehicle in court, without success. Ratcliffe has said he spent around 1.5 billion euros ($1.7 billion) bringing it to market.

Now that vehicle is up for a different kind of replacement job. The Light Mobility Vehicle program is intended to replace the British Army’s aging Pinzgauer trucks and its own Land Rover 90 and 110 Wolf models, the military-spec Defenders that have served British forces for decades. Team Grenadier has adapted the civilian Grenadier into nine different military configurations for the competition.

Team Grenadier plans to show several of those variants at DVD2026, a UK defense vehicle exhibition running September 16 and 17 at UTAC Millbrook. Among them is the newly revealed Enhanced Protection Vehicle, an armored addition to the lineup, alongside the previously shown General-Purpose Vehicle and Multi-Role Light Vehicle.

Armored vehicle analyst Nicholas Drummond wrote on X that the Enhanced Protection Vehicle’s appearance came as a surprise. “Just as everyone had discounted the Ineos Grenadier’s chances of being selected for the British Army’s LMV requirement, it comes up with this: a protected version,” Drummond wrote. He also raised the idea of a Jaguar Land Rover acquisition of INEOS, arguing it could let a UK-designed vehicle be built and supported through a domestic supply chain, a move he said could benefit both companies.

Defense analysis outlet Calibre Defence, comparing the Enhanced Protection Vehicle to the British Army’s older Snatch Land Rover, noted that the Snatch was originally built to transport prisoners in Northern Ireland rather than withstand roadside bombs, with armor added onto an existing chassis rather than engineered in from the start.

By the end of 2008, 37 British soldiers had died in Snatch Land Rovers in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the vehicles were labeled “mobile coffins” amid criticism of the government’s failure to replace them sooner. Calibre Defence argued the Grenadier Enhanced Protection Vehicle’s monocoque hull and built-in blast protection should offer a meaningfully better baseline against smaller roadside bombs than the Snatch ever did.
