British startup develos modular ground drone for front line

British defense technology company Stratonex Defence Technologies has unveiled VARAN, a modular unmanned ground vehicle concept designed to accompany and support forward units on the battlefield, with swappable mission equipment and the ability to navigate without satellite positioning.
The company introduced the vehicle on social media and on its website, describing VARAN as a payload-agnostic platform that can be configured for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, logistics, force protection, electronic warfare and counter-drone missions.
Stratonex says VARAN uses autonomous navigation and passive 3D sensing to move across rough terrain, including in areas where GPS and other satellite navigation signals are jammed or unavailable. Passive sensing means the vehicle builds a picture of its surroundings without emitting signals such as radar or lidar pulses that an enemy could detect, and the company says the platform is designed to keep a low visual, thermal and acoustic signature.
The vehicle is built on an open systems architecture, which Stratonex says allows mission-specific payloads and future technologies to be integrated as requirements change. The company pitches VARAN as a way for troops to move farther and carry more in expeditionary operations, from reconnaissance support to counter-drone and rapid deployment tasks.

Stratonex framed the platform around configuration and integration, asking what capabilities potential users would want added to an unmanned ground vehicle.
Stratonex is a UK-based company co-founded by Ben Everitt, a former Conservative member of Parliament for Milton Keynes North, and describes itself as a developer of autonomous systems and mission software focused on sovereign capability for Britain and its allies. In July 2026, Nasdaq-listed VisionWave Holdings appointed Stratonex as its commercialization and integration partner for the UK and Europe under a non-exclusive distributor agreement covering VisionWave’s autonomous systems, sensing and counter-drone technologies.

Uncrewed ground vehicles have become a growing focus for European armies after their wide use in the war in Ukraine, where both sides rely on them to haul supplies, evacuate wounded troops and carry weapons along front lines exposed to constant drone surveillance. Britain’s Ministry of Defence has also been funding and trialing uncrewed ground platforms for logistics and combat support roles.
Stratonex presents VARAN as a concept platform, and the company is inviting feedback from potential users on which capabilities to integrate as development continues.
