China calls for a genuine and lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

On May 21, Xinhua News Agency reported from the United Nations (Reporter Ji Li) that China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, spoke at the Security Council's open meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, calling on all parties concerned to fully comply with the Gaza ceasefire agreement and achieve a truly lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

Fu Cong stated that the Gaza ceasefire agreement was reached in October last year, leading to some improvement in the situation in Gaza, but there is still a long way to go to completely silence the guns and fully end the suffering. The international community needs to build a broader consensus and make more proactive efforts. Since the ceasefire agreement was reached, Israel has been bombing and attacking almost daily, resulting in over 870 deaths. China calls on all parties, especially Israel, to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement and achieve a truly lasting ceasefire in Gaza. The guarantors of the ceasefire agreement and relevant parties with significant influence should take more proactive actions to maintain the ceasefire.

Fu Cong pointed out that the current humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with ongoing shortages of essential supplies such as drinking water, medical supplies, and fuel, leaving many people without shelter. The public health issues in Gaza must be taken seriously. Israel must fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law as an occupying power, lift restrictions on the entry of humanitarian supplies, and allow urgently needed medicines, fuel, and shelter facilities to enter Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is the backbone of humanitarian efforts in Gaza, and Israel should effectively ensure the privileges, exemptions, and normal functioning of the Agency.

Fu Cong expressed that the "two-state solution" is the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian issue. Any arrangements or establishment of new mechanisms must adhere to the principle of "Palestinians governing Palestinians," respect the will of the Palestinian people, and promote rather than undermine the "two-state solution." The international community should reject any unilateral actions that erode the foundation of the "two-state solution" and oppose any attempts to change the demographic and territorial structure of Gaza. The Security Council should maintain close attention to the situation in Gaza and post-war arrangements and play its due role. China is willing to work with the international community to promote a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, implement the "two-state solution," and achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue as soon as possible.
