Denmark orders more Norwegian anti-ship missiles
Denmark is buying more Naval Strike Missiles from Norway’s Kongsberg to arm the coastal defense system it acquired last year, under a contract worth about 400 million Norwegian kroner ($42.4 million).
Kongsberg announced the deal on Oct. 19, 2026, without saying how many missiles Denmark is getting. The sale is structured as a government-to-government agreement between Norway’s defense materiel agency and its Danish counterpart, the procurement agencies that also handled Denmark’s earlier purchase.
The Naval Strike Missile, or NSM, is a stealthy, subsonic anti-ship missile that flies low over the sea and uses an imaging infrared seeker to pick out its target, with a range of more than 185 km (115 miles). It can also strike targets on land.
Denmark bought the ground-based coastal version in 2025, becoming the fifth NATO country to operate it after Poland, the United States, Romania and Latvia. The system combines Kongsberg’s fire control system, the NSM missile and truck-mounted launchers that can be moved and hidden along the coast, letting a small force threaten enemy warships from shore.
Copenhagen has separately ordered NSMs for its navy’s frigates.
The United States is the largest user of the missile. The U.S. Navy carries NSM on its ships, and the U.S. Marine Corps fields it on the NMESIS launcher, an uncrewed vehicle carrying two missiles. The U.S. Marine Corps stood up its first medium-range missile battalion with NMESIS at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, this month.
