Denmark Will Deploy Conscripts to Greenland

[Global Times Comprehensive Report] According to the Copenhagen Post on the 24th, the Danish government announced on the 23rd that it will begin deploying conscripts to Greenland in the future. This is the latest move by Denmark to strengthen its military presence in this Arctic autonomous territory. AFP reported that in recent years, the issue of Greenland has been heating up due to its significant strategic position and ongoing pressure from the United States.

The Danish Armed Forces consist of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the National Guard, with the Army, Navy, and Air Force being active regular troops, totaling approximately 19,500 personnel. Reports indicate that Denmark has been continuously adjusting its defense policy in recent years. Due to the ongoing impact of the Ukraine crisis, Denmark decided in 2025 to reform its conscription system, extending the service period for conscripts to 11 months and opening conscription to women for the first time.

As pressure from the United States increases, Denmark is continuously reinforcing its military deployment in Greenland. In January of this year, the Danish military began transporting military supplies to Greenland and dispatched an advance team. According to Danish TV2, the Danish Army had then sent approximately 300 soldiers to Greenland, although the number has gradually decreased since then.

Danish TV2 reported in May that the military is studying a plan to send conscripts to Greenland. Documents show that due to the need to redeploy professional soldiers back to the mainland to form a combat-capable first brigade, which is one of NATO's core capability goals set for Denmark. The Chief of the Danish Army, Boisen, stated, "The plan is to withdraw the first brigade from the rotation deployment system for a longer period to focus on the construction of brigade-level forces." Some officials and military analysts have stated that due to a shortage of professional soldiers, conscripts will have to take over most of the tasks in Greenland. However, Defense Minister Bruus denied the claim of a shortage of professional soldiers on June 23.

Danish Broadcasting Corporation reported that Bruus stated that conscripts will be stationed in Greenland alongside professional soldiers and will fully participate in local tasks. This group will depart at the end of July and will stay in Greenland for one month. He said that the reformed conscription system is now capable of supporting the military in executing tasks, and therefore conscripts will also be included in the defense system in Greenland in the future.

Some analysts believe that as the strategic value of the Arctic region continues to rise, and activities by countries such as the U.S. and Russia in the region increase, Greenland is receiving more and more attention.
