"Firing 455 Shells"! UNIFIL Reports: Israel Launched "The Most Intense Attack in Months" on Southern Lebanon Last Weekend

[Global Network Report, Reporter Suo Yanqi] According to reports from the United Nations official website and Al Jazeera, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stated on the 10th that the Israeli military launched the "most intense attack in months" on southern Lebanon over the weekend—between last Friday (the 7th) and Sunday (the 9th), the Israeli military fired a total of 455 shells at southern Lebanon and violated Lebanese airspace 97 times.

UNIFIL reported that on just last Saturday (the 8th), the Israeli military fired 229 shells, "the highest number of shells fired in a single day since June 21." In addition, Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that most of the airspace violations were caused by drones, but there were also some incidents involving helicopters and fighter jets.

Reports indicate that the United Nations stated that Israel's actions violate UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Resolution 1701 was adopted by the Security Council on August 11, 2006, aimed at ending the conflict between Lebanon and Israel that erupted in July of the same year, stipulating that no armed forces other than the Lebanese government army and UN peacekeeping forces should exist between the Litani River and the "Blue Line." The "Blue Line" is a temporary boundary drawn by the United Nations between the areas occupied by Lebanon and Israel in the Golan Heights, approximately 30 kilometers from the Litani River.

On June 26, the trilateral talks between Lebanon, Israel, and the United States concluded in Washington, D.C., announcing a framework agreement. However, since the agreement was reached, the Israeli military has repeatedly launched military strikes against targets within Lebanon. Hezbollah has strongly opposed the Lebanon-Israel talks. Hezbollah has repeatedly stated that as long as Israel continues to occupy southern Lebanon, it will continue its "resistance," while also expressing support for the deployment of the Lebanese army to areas south of the Litani River and emphasizing that the Israeli military must completely withdraw from Lebanese territory. The Israeli military stated on August 5 that in response to Hezbollah's "blatant violation" of the ceasefire agreement, it began airstrikes in southern Lebanon.
