France loses a Mirage 2000D fighter in night crash

A French Mirage 2000D ground-attack jet crashed late on Oct. 20 near the village of Rogéville in Meurthe-et-Moselle, in eastern France, as it was returning from a mission, killing at least one of its two crew members, while rescuers continue searching for the second. The French Air and Space Force said the accident happened at around 10:40 p.m., and the Ministry of the Armed Forces said in a statement on Oct. 21 that a body had been recovered and is awaiting identification.

The two-seat jet belonged to Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne” at Air Base 133 Nancy-Ochey, the home of France’s Mirage 2000D fleet, and carried a fighter pilot and a weapon systems officer, known in the French Air and Space Force as a NOSA. Air force spokesman Col. David Pappalardo told French media that the crew consisted of a young pilot in training and an experienced weapon systems officer with many flight hours, that at least one of them was unable to eject, and that it is far too early to draw any conclusions about the cause.

Residents of Rogéville heard an explosion shortly before 11 p.m., and a drone located the wreckage at around 4 a.m. in fields and woodland between Rogéville, Tremblecourt and Domèvre-en-Haye, roughly midway between Toul and Pont-à-Mousson. Firefighters, gendarmes, teams from Air Base 133 and a rescue helicopter with thermal imaging have been searching an area of about 15 km (9 miles) around Pont-à-Mousson for the second crew member, with a command post set up in Rogéville.

Separate safety and judicial investigations have been opened to determine what caused the crash, the ministry said. The aircraft was not carrying weapons, according to French media, and officials have not said what kind of mission the crew had flown before heading back to Nancy-Ochey.

The Mirage 2000D is a two-seat strike aircraft built by Dassault Aviation to fly ground-attack missions by day and night in complex environments, and it has been one of France’s main combat jets in every major French air campaign of the past two decades, from Afghanistan and Libya to Mali and the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. France received 86 of the jets, the last in 2001, and 55 are going through a mid-life upgrade worth about €532.5 million that adds new avionics, MICA air-to-air missiles, a gun pod and new guided bombs, with the first modernized aircraft accepted in April 2025 and the type expected to serve until at least 2035.

The crash is the deadliest accident for the Nancy-based Mirage 2000D fleet since January 2019, when a jet from the same base went down during a low-level training flight over the Jura mountains, killing Capt. Baptiste Chirié and Lt. Audrey Michelon. In August 2024, two Rafale fighters collided over Meurthe-et-Moselle near Colombey-les-Belles, about 20 km from the latest crash site, killing two crew members while a third ejected.

The search for the second crew member was still underway on Oct. 21, and the ministry has not released the names of the two airmen.
