IAEA Warns: Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities Face Ongoing Safety Risks
On November 6, Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, issued a statement indicating that military activities around Ukraine's nuclear facilities have increased, posing ongoing security risks to the nuclear facilities and their associated infrastructure. The statement calls on all parties to exercise maximum military restraint and to cease military actions that could endanger the nuclear facilities, personnel, and related infrastructure, in order to prevent a serious nuclear accident.
The statement pointed out that in the past week, there have been drone attacks and military activities around several nuclear power plants in Ukraine, affecting some external power supply lines of the nuclear power plants. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is currently relying on only one external power line to maintain its electricity supply, and diesel reserves are also under pressure. The statement also mentioned that a staff member of the nuclear power plant was killed in a drone attack on October 29 while on his way to the plant.
Grossi stated that the International Atomic Energy Agency continues to provide assistance for nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, recently delivering lead-acid batteries, uninterruptible power supply equipment, and other materials to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to support nuclear waste management and the operation of related facilities.
