Indian Media: India's Defense Industry Output Grows by 174% in Ten Years
According to a report by Reference News Network on May 9, the Indian monthly magazine Business World reported on May 5 that India's Minister of State for Technology, Jitendra Singh, stated on the 4th that over the past decade, the output value of India's defense industry has grown by 174%, reaching 1.54 trillion rupees (approximately 16.2 billion USD), and defense exports have increased 34 times, reaching 236.22 billion rupees. These changes highlight India's shift towards nurturing a domestic defense industry and developing a technology-driven combat model.
Speaking at the 2026 Northern Technology Seminar held in Prayagraj, Singh noted that India's defense construction is entering a critical stage, increasingly relying on advanced technology, innovative research and development, and the participation of the private sector. He pointed out that real-time data systems, automation technology, and emerging technologies are profoundly reshaping modern warfare, and traditional military strength is no longer the sole determining factor.
Singh emphasized that through continuous policy reforms and industry participation, India has transformed from one of the world's largest defense equipment importers to an emerging defense exporter. The private sector contributes approximately 150 billion rupees to the total defense export amount, reflecting that India's defense industry is achieving a structural transformation and is committed to building a collaborative manufacturing and innovation-driven growth pattern.
Singh also highlighted the important role of technology in the defense sector, stating that artificial intelligence, quantum technology, aerospace, and atomic energy have become core supports for India's defense readiness system. He indicated that policy reforms have further encouraged the industry to actively engage in the defense sector, effectively shortening the innovation and research cycle and promoting the large-scale application of domestic technologies.
