Insufficient Ammunition: US Military Wants to Deploy "Patriot" System, Poland Says No
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, April 1 - Polish media reported on March 31 that the United States has requested NATO ally Poland to deploy a set of "Patriot" missile defense systems to the Middle East to supplement its increasingly urgent ammunition stockpile in response to Iranian counterattacks.
The Polish newspaper "Rzeczpospolita" cited informed sources in reporting this news. Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak later responded on social media that Poland's missile defense systems are intended to protect its airspace and NATO's eastern flank and will not be moved elsewhere.
According to RIA Novosti, Poland has two sets of "Patriot" missile defense systems, equipped with about 600 interceptors.
As the conflict in the Middle East drags on, the U.S. military is facing a shortfall in the use of offensive missiles, and ammunition for defense is also "inadequate." It is understood that currently, the U.S. military's "THAAD," "Patriot," and "Standard-6" interceptors are all in short supply due to rapid consumption in the conflict and insufficient replenishment.
Data shows that within just 36 hours of the outbreak of the conflict, U.S. air defense systems have already used over 300 "Patriot" interceptors, while Gulf countries have used 280 interceptors, in addition to launching a large number of missiles, and replenishing this ammunition may take years.
According to previous reports from U.S. media, the U.S. has moved some of the "THAAD" missile defense systems deployed in South Korea to the Middle East and has also redirected "Patriot" interceptors from other regions. (Wang Hongbin)
