Israeli Airstrike in Southern Lebanon Kills Female Journalist, Lebanese Ambulance Attacked
Xinhua News Agency, Beirut, April 22 (Reporter Shen Feng) According to news from the Lebanese health department and media on the 22nd, Israel launched an airstrike on the town of Tyre in southern Lebanon that day, resulting in the death of one journalist and injury to another. A Lebanese ambulance was attacked by Israeli forces during the rescue operation.
According to a statement from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, Israeli forces first targeted a vehicle in Tyre, killing two people inside. Subsequently, two Lebanese female journalists, Zainab Faraj and Amal Khalil, took refuge in a nearby residential building, but Israeli forces launched an airstrike on that building.
The statement said that when the Lebanese Red Cross arrived at the scene to transport the injured, Israeli forces threw stun grenades at the ambulance and opened fire, hindering the rescue operation and preventing the rescue of Khalil. Faraj was rescued and taken to the hospital for surgery. The bodies of the two deceased individuals from the vehicle were also transported.
According to reports from Lebanon's New TV, the Lebanese Red Cross later found Khalil's body in the rubble.
The Ministry of Public Health condemned the actions of the Israeli side, stating that they not only obstructed the rescue operation for the journalists but also openly attacked an ambulance clearly marked with the Red Cross emblem.
Earlier, sources from Lebanon's security department confirmed to Xinhua reporters that the two deceased individuals in the vehicle were members of Hezbollah.
Hezbollah issued a statement that day claiming its armed personnel used an attack drone to strike an Israeli Humvee in the town of Kantarah and shot down four Israeli reconnaissance drones in the town of Mansouri. The statement indicated that these actions were a response to Israel's violation of the ceasefire agreement and the previous attack in Tyre.
At midnight local time on the 17th, a temporary ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect for ten days. However, Israel continued to launch attacks, citing Hezbollah's violations of the ceasefire agreement. Data released by Lebanon's disaster risk management department on the 22nd showed that since the resumption of hostilities on March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have resulted in 2,475 deaths and 7,696 injuries.
Israeli airstrikes targeted a vehicle in Tiri, Lebanon, on April 22, 2023, killing one journalist and injuring another.
