For the PLA Air Force, the training focus is clearly shifting from "mastering the operation of a single aircraft" to "integrating personnel, aircraft, networks, and tactical chains into a cohesive unit."

In simple terms, real aircraft fly in the sky while virtual aircraft engage in combat from the ground system, which can also synchronously inject "Red Force" targets, threat scenarios, and special situation scripts. The benefits of this approach are straightforward: first, it can increase the density of confrontations without significantly increasing flight hours; second, it allows for the inclusion of complex electromagnetic environments, formation coordination, and multiple batches of air situations that are difficult to construct in regular training; third, it is more suitable for the J-16, which is already tasked with long-range air superiority, ground strikes, and system node strikes.

The official video reveals that another group of pilots on the ground simultaneously operated virtual aircraft to conduct confrontation training with the airborne J-16s, indicating that the PLA is no longer satisfied with traditional single-aircraft exercises but is exploring the direct integration of simulation systems into live tactical training.

From Flying to Coordinating: The Core of This Upgrade

If one only looks at this video, it is easy to interpret it as a technical demonstration. However, when viewed alongside two other types of training recently disclosed by the PLA, the context becomes clearer. In a drone assessment revealed by a brigade of the 72nd Group Army on the 24th, a "gold medal pilot" who scored nearly full marks in basic subjects lost points due to deficiencies in ground-air coordination, intelligence linkage, and tactical cooperation, initially failing to even achieve an excellent rating. In early August, another air force brigade publicly introduced a lightweight transport aircraft resource scheduling system, compressing the past reliance on paper records and manual coordination for transport planning into automatically generated plans within minutes. In simple terms, the PLA is not just changing a specific subject but is overhauling the entire training logic and support logic.

The reasoning behind this is not complex. In modern air combat, the greatest fear is not inexperienced pilots but rather a breakdown in the system. The true value of a dual-seat heavy platform like the J-16 lies not only in how many missiles it can carry but also in its ability to form a closed loop with early warning aircraft, ground-based air defense, electronic warfare forces, ground command chains, and unmanned reconnaissance nodes. The greatest significance of LVC is precisely in bringing this "networked combat" into regular training rather than waiting for real combat to take chances.

What is truly worth observing next is not that the J-16 has conducted another virtual-real fusion training, but whether this model will quickly extend to early warning aircraft, transport aircraft, ground air defense, and drone units, forming a normalized confrontation across platforms and services. If that step is reached, the focus of PLA training reform will no longer be "training the equipment" but rather "mastering the system."
