Morocco Intends to Introduce South Korean FA-50 Fighter Jets
According to a report by Reference News on October 13, the Spanish magazine "Defense" reported on October 10 that during the 2026 Marrakech Air Show, Morocco's Aviation Maintenance Company, SABCA Morocco, and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed a memorandum of understanding. This cooperation aims to establish a comprehensive commercial and industrial cooperation framework covering the Moroccan market, with the goal of exploring opportunities to provide the Moroccan Air Force with T-50 advanced trainer aircraft and the light combat aircraft FA-50 derived from it (as shown in the picture).
Morocco is particularly interested in the FA-50 fighter jet mainly to fill the capability gap in its fleet of advanced trainers and light combat aircraft. The Moroccan Air Force currently still relies on the French "Alpha" trainer aircraft introduced in the 1970s, whose systems can no longer meet the training needs of pilots, preventing them from mastering the operational skills of the fighter jets that form the core of Morocco's air power today, especially the F-16 Block 72.
The FA-50 offers a modern and reliable platform that combines advanced training capabilities with light combat capabilities, with a notable advantage being its high compatibility with U.S. weapon systems—this aircraft can be equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and air-to-air missiles, facilitating tactical and operational integration with the F-16 fleet.
The memorandum signed with KAI is the result of a diplomatic and planning process that has gradually taken shape since April 2025. At that time, Morocco's Minister of Industry, Trade, Investment, and Digital Economy, Ryad Mezzour, made an official visit to Seoul, opening up prospects for cooperation between the two countries in the defense sector. During this visit, Mezzour held intensive meetings with major South Korean defense groups. Morocco officially expressed its intention to modernize its armed forces through the procurement of K2 "Black Panther" tanks (for the army), KSS-Ⅲ submarines (to strengthen the naval fleet), and "Iron Eagle" II surface-to-air missiles (to address various aerial and ballistic missile threats).
