Norway Expands Finnmark Troops, Strengthens Military Presence in the Arctic

The battalion is stationed in the area bordering Norway and Russia and will add an artillery battalion, an air defense artillery company, and a communications company.
Finnmark Battalion Commander John Olav Fighlem stated, "Our firepower level is completely incomparable to the past." Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sannum added, "We will respond to any threats and attacks against Norway and NATO. We will defend every inch of our territory."
After this expansion, the Finnmark Battalion will have the capability to strike land targets within a range of approximately 40 kilometers and coordinate attacks by Norwegian and NATO forces' aircraft and ships. Norway shares a land border of about 198 kilometers with Russia, and the Finnmark Battalion's base in Porsanger is about 180 kilometers from the border. The battalion is responsible for patrolling the border. There is a significant military area on the Russian side, where forces such as the Northern Fleet are stationed.
The Russian Embassy in Norway did not comment on Norway's actions. The Russian government has previously dismissed allegations of posing a threat to NATO.
The Finnmark Battalion was established last year as Norway's second brigade-level force and is the first brigade-level force formed in the country since the end of the Cold War. Both of Norway's brigade-level forces are headquartered in the Arctic region. This expansion is Norway's response to the war in Ukraine and to U.S. President Trump's call for European allies to increase defense spending.
