Xinhua News Agency, Seoul, October 23 (Reporter Chen Yi, Sun Yiran) According to a report by Yonhap News Agency on the 23rd, the South Korean permanent representative to the United Nations sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council on the 22nd New York time, requesting North Korea to apologize for the recent landmine explosion incident that occurred in the Korean Demilitarized Zone and to take responsible measures.

The South Korean side stated in the letter that the explosion was caused by landmines planted by the North Korean military, violating the armistice agreement. The letter demands that the North apologize and take responsible measures, while urging the North to engage in dialogue to prevent the escalation of tensions and restore mutual trust.

The letter also mentioned that the North recently characterized the legitimate military actions conducted by the South Korean military near the military demarcation line as "provocations," and attempted to blame the South for escalating regional tensions. The letter calls on the international community to pay attention to this matter.

On September 21, a landmine explosion occurred while the South Korean Army's 25th Division was carrying out a mission in the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone near the Korean military demarcation line, resulting in injuries to three soldiers, two of whom were seriously injured. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff held a press conference on the 5th of this month, announcing the investigation results of the landmine explosion incident, stating that "the explosion was caused by anti-personnel landmines planted by North Korea south of the military demarcation line," and demanded that the North apologize and immediately clear the relevant landmines.

On the 6th, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement claiming that the recent landmine explosion incident in the Korean Demilitarized Zone was a farce fabricated and imposed by South Korea. The South's attempt to shift the responsibility onto North Korea and damage North Korea's national image is an intolerable major provocation.
