According to the announcement released by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the frigate named "Cristóbal Colón" joined the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle task force on the 3rd to carry out escort and training missions. The task force will head to the Mediterranean to provide defensive military support to Cyprus.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated in a media interview that sending military forces to carry out defensive missions is different from offensive missions. She also emphasized that Spain "will always stand with the EU to defend the fundamental principles of peace."
