The Production Capacity Behind 35 052D Destroyers: Insights from the Commissioning of the Ganzhi Ship into China's Destroyer Manufacturing System

In early February, Chinese state media disclosed a detail that is easily overlooked: the newly commissioned 052D destroyer Ganzhi (hull number 128) actually entered service in December 2025, but it was only reported publicly now. Meanwhile, several other ships of the same class, such as the Loudi (176), Tongchuan (177), and Rikaze (159), are also set to be commissioned intensively from late 2025 to early 2026.

What does this mean? As of now, the total number of active 052D destroyers in the People's Liberation Army Navy has reached 35. This number itself is noteworthy—since the commissioning of the first ship, Kunming, in 2014, 35 ships of the 7000-ton class have been built in 12 years, averaging nearly 3 deliveries per year, which is rare on a global scale.

An Underestimated Number

Many people compare the construction numbers of the U.S. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (currently over 70) and argue that 35 052Ds "are not enough." However, this comparison overlooks a key issue: the time span.

The Arleigh Burke-class has taken 35 years to build over 70 ships since the commissioning of the first ship in 1991, averaging about 2 deliveries per year. In contrast, the 052D has built 35 ships in 12 years, averaging nearly 3 deliveries per year, and this pace is being maintained. More importantly, the 052D has been produced in bulk while simultaneously constructing the 055-class 10,000-ton destroyers (8 in service, 2 under construction) and the 054A/B-class frigates (over 40 054As, 3 054Bs launched).

In simple terms, China's shipbuilding industry is now operating multiple production lines for destroyers and frigates simultaneously, and this capacity allocation capability itself is quite telling.

Three Supports Behind Bulk Production

The 052D's ability to maintain this production speed is not solely reliant on overtime at a single shipyard; there are three levels of support behind it:

1. Mature Modular Construction System

Starting from the 15th ship (around 2018), the construction cycle of the 052D has significantly shortened, from the early 30-36 months down to about 24 months. This is due to the maturity of modular construction technology—hull, power compartment, and weapon modules are prefabricated in different workshops and finally assembled on the slipway. This method greatly improves construction efficiency and explains why the same shipyard can simultaneously start multiple destroyers.

2. Stable Upstream Supply Chain

The key equipment involved in the 7000-ton destroyer includes: gas turbines (QC-280), diesel engines, phased array radars, vertical launch systems, and combat command systems. If any link in this chain falters, the entire production line will come to a halt. The ability of the 052D to maintain an average delivery speed of 3 ships per year indicates that the domestic supply chain for power systems and electronic equipment is operating stably.

It is worth noting that the latest batch of 052Ds (including the Ganzhi) has adopted an improved dual-sided rotating phased array radar, which was previously only used on the 055 class. This means that the production capacity of high-end electronic equipment is also expanding, capable of supporting multiple types of ships simultaneously.

3. Collaborative Production Across Multiple Shipyards

The construction of the 052D is distributed between Jiangnan Shipyard (Shanghai) and Dalian Shipyard, both of which are under China Shipbuilding Group. This "north-south division of labor" not only disperses risk but also fosters healthy competition—reportedly, Jiangnan is leading in welding automation, while Dalian excels in module lifting efficiency. This internal competition objectively drives overall efficiency improvements.

Continuously Improving "Production Line"

If you closely observe these 35 052Ds, you will find that they are not all identical. From the early batches to the latest Ganzhi, there have been at least three significant technological upgrades:

  • First Stage (First 12 Ships): Equipped with single-sided fixed phased array radar
  • Second Stage (Around 13th to 28th Ships): Improved radar dome shape, suspected enhancement in detection performance
  • Third Stage (From 29th Ship Onwards): Switched to dual-sided rotating radar, reducing blind spots, approaching the configuration of the 055

This "producing while improving" model ensures that the bulk production speed remains uninterrupted while avoiding technological obsolescence in later ships. In contrast, some countries' destroyer projects often pause after completing the first batch, waiting for the next generation design, leading to production capacity gaps.

An Unanswered Question

The current question is: When will the bulk production of the 052D stop?

From publicly available information, at least 2-3 more 052Ds are under construction (including those launched and awaiting commissioning). However, there is a rumor in the industry that Jiangnan's destroyer production capacity is shifting towards the 055 class, and the 054B frigate is also occupying slipway resources. If this is true, the 052D may ultimately be capped at around 40 ships.

But there is another possibility: considering the organizational needs of the PLA Navy's three major fleets (each fleet requires at least 12-15 main destroyers), along with the escort needs of future aircraft carrier groups, the 052D, as the "most cost-effective" medium destroyer, may continue to be produced in small batches until 2028 or even longer.

What is truly worth paying attention to is not how many more 052Ds will be built, but rather whether this bulk production system can be replicated for the 055 class. If the 055 can also achieve an average delivery speed of 2-3 ships per year, the maritime power balance in the Western Pacific will undergo structural changes within the next five years. Given that there are already 8 055s in service and 2 under construction, this possibility is not low.

The low-key commissioning of the Ganzhi may just be another routine milestone in this bulk production line. But the capacity system supporting this production line is what truly needs to be recognized.
