Xinhua News Agency, Washington, August 17 - On the 60th day since the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, U.S. President Trump reiterated on the 17th that the primary goal of the United States is that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons.

Trump posted on social media early that day, stating: “The primary goal of the (United States) is, and will always be, that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons in any way, shape, or form.”

The United States and Iran announced the official text of the memorandum of understanding on June 17, which includes a third clause stating that the U.S. and Iran commit to negotiate and reach a final agreement within a maximum of 60 days, a deadline that can be extended by mutual consent. However, due to serious differences on issues such as the Strait of Hormuz, U.S.-Iran negotiations have reached an impasse, with no substantial progress made.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Baghaei stated earlier on the 17th that the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding does not stipulate any so-called "60-day deadline." Iran will never adjust its policies under "pressure, ultimatums, or time constraints," but will make decisions entirely based on national interests and national security.
