Trump says he is studying the possibility of reducing U.S. troops in Germany.

On April 29, Xinhua News Agency reported from Washington (reporters Huang Qiang and Xu Jianmei) that U.S. President Trump stated on social media that the United States is considering the possibility of reducing the number of U.S. troops stationed in Germany, with a related decision to be made in the near future.

This is the second consecutive day that Trump has posted on social media regarding Germany. The day before, he expressed dissatisfaction with German Chancellor Merz's comments on Iran, stating, "Merz thinks it's fine for Iran to have nuclear weapons; he doesn't even know what he's talking about," and that Germany is currently "performing so poorly in both economic and other aspects."

On the 27th, Merz stated during an event at a high school in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, that the U.S. launched military actions against Iran without any strategic planning, leading to a current deadlock and being "humiliated" by Iran.

In 2020, during his first term, Trump announced a significant reduction of U.S. troops stationed in Germany and criticized Germany for not contributing enough to NATO's military spending.

The U.S. military presence in Germany is a product of the Allied military occupation of Germany after World War II and the U.S. global military deployment strategy. Currently, the U.S. European Command and Africa Command are both located in Stuttgart, Germany, while Ramstein Air Base serves as a major logistics hub for U.S. military operations in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. According to data from the U.S. Department of Defense, by the end of 2025, over 36,000 U.S. troops will be stationed in Germany.
