UK Conducts Comprehensive Review of Intelligence Sharing with Germany
According to a report by Reference News Network on October 10, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported on October 7 that British intelligence agencies have apparently begun a systematic review of all classified information provided to the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND) over the past few years. According to media reports from the UK, including the Daily Telegraph and the Independent, following the exposure of the intelligence leak involving August Hanning, who served as the head of the BND for a long time, the UK's foreign intelligence agency, MI6, and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), responsible for technical intelligence collection, are particularly concerned that their intelligence sources may be at risk as a result.
The Daily Telegraph quoted former MI6 agent Matthew Dunn as saying that British intelligence agencies will now "screen" every piece of information transferred to the BND and assess the risks involved in passing on this information. Dunn believes that the UK is likely to continue cooperating with German intelligence agencies. He pointed out that it is a common practice to assess whether the disclosure of information could lead to the exposure of intelligence sources through "automated reviews" before transferring classified information.
Reports indicate that Hanning was arrested on the 6th on suspicion of "attempted treason." This case is one of the largest intelligence scandals in Germany since the Cold War. German prosecutors accuse Hanning of purchasing classified documents and using them to write analytical reports for a foreign intelligence agency.
British intelligence expert Anthony Glees emphasized the impact of the Hanning leak. He stated, "The consequences could be extremely severe."
He also pointed out that this incident would affect cooperation among Western intelligence agencies. The CIA will be "thoroughly shaken," and MI6 will be as well.
Mark Henrichmann, chairman of the German Bundestag's parliamentary oversight committee, told North German Radio that the allegations against Hanning have "caused a huge shock," but that German intelligence agencies "enjoy a high reputation internationally." He believes that "as long as we send the right signals, we can get cooperation back on track."
UK intelligence agencies are conducting a systematic review of all confidential information shared with Germany's BND following the arrest of former BND chief August Hanning for alleged espionage.
