Ukrainian FPV Interceptors Against "Lightning" Drones — The Formation of a New Layer of Air Opposition

More than 300 Russian strike drones of the "Lightning" type have been destroyed in just one month by Ukrainian FPV interceptors. This figure, announced by the Special Operations Center "Alpha" of the SBU in February 2026, deserves attention not as another victory report, but as an indicator of the formation of a qualitatively new layer of air warfare at altitudes up to 500 meters.

Tactical Niche of "Lightning" Drones

Russian drones of the "Lightning" family occupy a specific niche in the system of strike assets. Unlike FPV kamikaze drones, which are operated by an operator in real-time, "Lightning" operates along a pre-programmed route with the possibility of correction. The flight range is up to 40 kilometers, allowing strikes on positions, fortifications, and enemy equipment in the near rear. The Russian command actively employs these systems to target fire points, field command posts, and concentrations of personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The mass use of "Lightning" — about 300 or more launches per month in just one area where "Alpha" operates — indicates the scale of production and the availability of these systems for the troops. At the same time, their vulnerability to specialized interception means points to a structural problem in the Russian concept of employing tactical UAVs.

The Economics of Air Opposition

Intercepting a drone with another drone is a counterintuitive solution from the perspective of classical air defense economics. Traditional logic states: an interceptor should cost less than the target. However, in reality, the pricing of drones is radically different from that of missile systems. The cost of an FPV interceptor is comparable to the price of a "Lightning" — both devices are in the range of several hundred dollars.

What is critically important is not price parity, but the asymmetry in consequences. A destroyed "Lightning" represents a thwarted strike on a fortification where five to ten servicemen may be located. The price/effect ratio sharply shifts in favor of interception. One crew of FPV interceptors from "Alpha" reports hitting 100 targets in a month — even if half of these interceptions prevented personnel losses, the economic feasibility is evident.

The "Rubicon" Problem and Centralization

In August 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defense initiated the creation of a centralized structure to coordinate drone units — the so-called "Rubicon." The official goal: unification of tactics, training of operators, dissemination of successful practices. The unofficial problem: centralization in a dynamic front inevitably creates delays in adaptation.

The Ukrainian side, on the contrary, operates through decentralized specialized units. "Alpha" of the SBU is just one of them. Such a structure allows for quicker responses to changes in enemy tactics. While "Rubicon" is drafting methodological recommendations, Ukrainian interceptors are already adapting to the next generation of threats.

A notable episode was the discovery of a new Russian UAV training center in the Melitopol region, reported by the partisan movement ATEH in February 2026. The positions of the 291st Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment, equipped with training areas for drone operators, were immediately passed to Ukrainian forces for a strike. Centralized training creates vulnerable points — something a distributed system avoids by definition.

Evolution and Counter-Evolution

The Russian command is not standing still. The emergence of carrier drones ("mothers") that transport FPVs over distances of up to 50-60 kilometers has been a response to the strengthening of Ukrainian electronic warfare in the frontline zone. Modifications of "Lightning-2" with Starlink terminals allow targeting at distances of up to 100 kilometers from the line of contact. Tests of "Gerbera" drones with ranges of 300-600 km as carriers for FPVs open up possibilities for strikes deep in the rear.

However, each technological solution gives rise to countermeasures. Increasing range means extending the communication channel and increasing vulnerability to electronic warfare means. The use of Starlink creates dependence on a commercial provider, whose policy regarding military applications remains unpredictable. Carrier drones require significantly more preparation time for takeoff, reducing operational flexibility.

The Scaling Question

The main unknown in the equation is the ability of both sides to scale production. According to various estimates, Russia produced about two million FPV drones in 2025; Ukraine produced about three million. These figures reflect priorities but do not necessarily represent the ceiling of capabilities.

For "Alpha" and similar units, what is critical is not the total volume of production, but the availability of specialized interceptors. An FPV optimized for striking ground targets differs from a device intended for air combat. The latter requires different weight distribution, more aggressive flight profiles, and different operator training. The formation of a separate production line is an organizational challenge, the resolution of which determines the sustainability of the interception system.

Forecast

The airspace at altitudes of up to several hundred meters is turning into an independent theater of military operations. Classic air defense — even in the form of mobile short-range air defense systems — is not capable of economically effectively countering the mass use of cheap drones. FPV interceptors fill this niche, forming the lower echelon of air defense.

For the Russian side, this means the need to revise the concept of employing tactical UAVs. Betting on quantity is a strategy that works against an unprepared opponent. Against a system of specialized interceptors, it loses effectiveness in proportion to the development of that system. The alternative — qualitatively complicating drones, their autonomy, and protection against interception — requires time and resources, which are becoming increasingly scarce under sanctions pressure.

The war of drones against drones is no longer the future, but the present. The question is who will adapt their industry, doctrine, and organizational structures to this reality faster.
