Ukrainian sources say Su-30 shot down off coast

Unconfirmed reports emerged late on Wednesday that a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet was shot down over the Black Sea near southern Ukraine, according to multiple Ukrainian sources familiar with the situation.

The reports state that the aircraft belonged to the Russian Armed Forces and was lost in the maritime area south of Ukraine’s coastline.

Several Ukrainian outlets reported that the incident occurred in the evening hours and that the aircraft’s crew did not survive. These claims have not been independently verified, and the Russian side has issued no public comment regarding the reported loss as of the time of publication.

According to the Ukrainian sources, the Su-30SM was operating over the Black Sea when it was brought down. No official statement has been released by the Ukrainian military confirming the incident, and no details have been provided regarding the weapon or system allegedly used in the engagement.

The reported incident came on the same day that information circulated about the loss of a Russian Su-34 strike aircraft with its crew. Ukrainian sources and Russian media stated that the Su-34 was also lost during operations on that day, although Russian authorities have likewise not commented publicly on that report. The two incidents have not been officially linked by either side.

The Su-30SM is a twin-engine, two-seat multirole fighter used by Russia’s Aerospace Forces and Naval Aviation units. It is designed for air superiority missions, maritime strike operations, and escort roles, and is frequently deployed over the Black Sea region as part of Russia’s air patrol and strike coordination activities. The aircraft is capable of carrying air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons and is routinely used to support Russian operations against Ukrainian territory and maritime traffic.
